Open Source Bridge - Day Two

Command-Line Kung Fu: White Belt by Hal Pomeranz I really enjoyed this talk. I have enough knowledge of the command line to understand most of it and was able to learn some great tips and tricks. Granted, there were parts that were over my head, I made a list of command I don’t know so I can further my knowledge on my own. I would recommend taking courses from Hal to anyone, he has a great wit and ability to not talk over your head.

Project Management should be boring by Chromatic X
Chromatic is my hero. He understands and can explain project management like no-one I know. He focused on agile development methods. I find standard project management theories really don’t work for software/web development. I am a huge fan of agile methodologies and hope to apply more and more to my own life.

“M” is for Manual: Creating documentation for your project by Paul Frileds
I was hoping this talk would focus on exactly what to document and when, however, it was more about open source tools that are available for use in writing documentation. All good stuff and I will certainly refer to the wiki notes on this one when I need to write documentation again.

I am passing on the unconference sessions tomorrow, due to still being in recovery mode from foot surgery.

Open Source Bridge 2009 - Day One

Today I am celebrating my birthday by attending Open Source Bridge. These are the talks I attended.

My Grand Experiment: A Portland Women-focused Tech Group by Gabrielle Roth. I loved this talk, though I try not to make my gender an issue in my love and use of technology and geeky things, it was nice to feel supported and reminded that I have a lot to contribute to my community.

Please Your Pixel-Hungry Eyes With Codes That Read Better by Bram Pitoyo. Yumm fonts. I forget just how much I love words, letters and the science of. Bram is able to concisely explain fonts, what makes a good font and how to manipulate them for readability and legibility. Now I want to design, design, design.

Making Twitter Suck Less With Perl by Jonathon Leto Though I know very little about perl, Johathon is an engaging speaker who made the talk enjoyable for those of us lacking knowledge.

Code-n-Splode Birds of a Feather by Gabrielle Roth The talk was free form and focused on the place of women in the technology field. It was a follow up the her earlier prepared talk.

Looking forward to tomorrow.

Help Save CubeSpace

CubeSpace, the wonderful meeting place of PDXCritique is having some financial issues. In these rough times and at all times, it is up to us, the community that so values this resource to dig deep and help them out.

We, the PDXCritique group, intend to begin paying for the space that has previously been so kindly donated to us.

My partner and I have personally donated $160 dollars so far and done as much as we can to get the word out and encourage others to assist in any way they can. If you want to donate, go here: http://savecubespacepdx.com/

Tofino Auctions, a great company I have the pleasure of doing work for, has also set up an auction with some pretty awesome stuff up for grabs. All proceeds go to help CubeSpace.

Information Architecture

Information architecture has always been a strong area of interest for me, and I was recently given the opportunity to rebuild a site from the ground up. I decided it was high time to put my usability and information architecture knowledge to use. I am currently working on my first content inventory and loving it. Putting together a spreadsheet documenting the entire structure of a site is highly fulfilling.

I am greatly anticipating being able to go over the inventory and remove redundancy and consolidate areas that require it. I will be excited to see what results these changes produce.

Mentoring

One of the things I truly enjoy is helping other people learn and experience the joy of making their visions become reality. I met a friend of mine the other day at a coffee shop to give some CSS tips and teach her how to theme out her WordPress blog.

I got this note from her today: “You are a freaking CSS goddess. With all those pointers and resources you gave me it took me about 20 minutes to do what I’ve been trying to do for weeks. Thanks.”

New site, new start

Currently experimenting with word press and the modularity theme. So far, so good. I am looking forward to blogging about my web projects, my user group and other passions, photography and the arts.
